LORRAINE HAS COME TO LIGHT
Stéphane Cyran is a pretty positive guy and passionate about wine, food, health, tourism, languages, land, horses, art, music, design, graphics and on, the list goes. Still, he works best when he is 100% focused on what he is dreaming. If there is anything, he has learned it is that results rarely come fast. Following your passion doesn't just happen. It requires hard work. He had no idea if he was going to succeed. But he picked up skills that helped him down the road.
In 2015 Stéphane stepped into something greater than himself. As he is always looking to grow, he realized that the only thing that matters is what he is excited about, and that is the land of Lorraine, his birth land. Being a wine amateur for many years, he came to wine through gastronomy. Thanks to all the winemakers he met, he got a crush on natural wine, and that changed his tasting life forever.
He started studying at the Alsatian Rouffach wine school in 2012-2013, and when he was graduated, he began to seek for some vineyards in Lorraine which he found in the Côtes-de-Toul near Nancy. With his wife Audrey and two kids, he settled in the historical village of Mont-Le-Vignoble and the year of 2016 was his first vintage. His vines are from 10 to 20 years old Pinot Noir, and Gamay planted as in Burgundy and conducted organically.
NEWCOMER
Do not expect any organic or natural wine in Lorraine. Stéphane is the first. He has set his sails. Does he have to learn to ease up on his perfectionism? No. Instead, he is going to run a race focused on his grapes. As a vigneron, Stéphane Cyran is a newcomer. We met two years ago in Jura where he kindly but persistently asked me to taste his wine. His Incipit. A Pet Nat of Gamay that blows me away. A gorgeous beauty. Being beautiful isn't just about looking good on the outside. It's also about feeling confident and letting your inner beauty shine from within like the hidden beauty of Incipit. Few months on the lees, seven years being thinking and only now does the story begin. Harvested on October 8th and bottled on November 18th. Only 8hl of directly pressed grapes and vinified in stainless steel vats without any input. No sulphur. Non-dégorgé. The Latin verb Incipit is the first words of a novel or the opening notes of a piece of music. It means starting, and the name Incipit gives the style and the main direction about Stéphane's work. Parallel he vinified two hl of red Gamay in the same spirit and this Cuvée will be released after the 2017 harvest.
BEST NATURAL GRIS-DE-TOUL It is far easy for me to start questioning what Stéphane is dreaming about but in the end, what matters is how much he is enjoying himself. You can never know where he shall end up so I might as well enjoy the ride. He planted Auxerrois and Pinot Meunier from the famous Hebinger Nursery in Eguisheim, and his aim is ever to create the best natural Gris-de-Toul. We met again in Nancy last year where he kindly asked us to taste his 2018 new red wine made from Pinot Noir, and Gamay named à l'Origine wherein both wine work and the label Stéphane pays homage to Gustave Courbet.
A L'ORIGINE HOMAGE TO GUSTAVE COURBET Stéphane Cyran's admiration for Gustave Courbet most definitely extended to the Masterpiece "The Origin of the World" that Courbet painted in 1866. Iconoclastic and influential realist painter Courbet is often regarded as the 19th century's pioneering artist. Courbet rejected academic traditionalism and bourgeois convention, seeking conflict both artistically and socially to change the public's taste and way of seeing. Instead of idealizing his subjects, he dedicated himself to showing things as they are. His erotically portrayed nudes were received with scandal and even police attention. Younger artists enthusiastically adopted these technical liberties. By exhibiting independently, Courbet paved the way for upcoming avant-garde movements, particularly Impressionism. As a natural winemaker, Stéphane Cyran will with no doubt pave the way for the younger generation. There are a lot of people out there that try to tell you that you cannot go after your dream, but Stéphane Cyran will never give up. His determination to succeed is strong enough. He brilliantly will be the best.
Stéphane is already well on the way by receiving le "Coup de Coeur" for Gonzo Gamay 2017 par Le Monde. It is the consecration and national recognition for splendid wines that were ignored until today. NIEUWE JAARGANG oktober
