Back in the vibrant summer of 2017, we had the joy of visiting Pierre and Florence at their lovely home in Metz, nestled in the picturesque French Moselle. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by an inviting scene—bikes waiting outside, and in the repurposed garage, now a charming cellar, the magical transformation of grapes into wine was quietly taking place. This remarkable journey began in 2015 with 1,000 bottles of exquisite Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Fast forward to this year, and we find ourselves celebrating the extraordinary achievement of 4,000 bottles!

Pierre Andrey, a former medical equipment consultant, exemplifies passion and dedication through his remarkable transition to full-time winemaking. His love for natural wine has driven him to become a traveling winemaker, a unique pursuit filled with adventure and artistry. He travels across the various enchanting regions of France, from Alsace to Beaujolais to Jura, sourcing organically grown grapes from friends who share his fervor for authenticity. With his trusty van, Pierre brings these grapes back to Metz, crafting pure wine without chemicals or sulphur. This distinctive approach not only showcases his commitment to true craftsmanship but also inspires all those who are fortunate enough to hear his story.

Behind his home lies a picturesque twelve acres where Pierre channels his creativity into experimenting with Pinot Noir, always striving for purity and authenticity in his craft. He utilizes a special vessel, the Dame-Jeanne, to shape the essence of each grape into something truly magical. Adopting a hands-off philosophy, he allows nature to guide him, recognizing the intricate beauty that lies in the complex scents and flavors of natural wine. Every sip is a delightful surprise, particularly when it comes to the delightful acidity. Pierre’s wines are a reflection of his deep respect for the earth and the fruits it offers; he neither adds nor removes anything, maintaining the genuine character and history of the grapes from their diverse origins.

I still remember the excitement of tasting Pierre’s wines for the very first time at a salon event. He had cleverly tucked a couple of bottles under his coat—each one filled with pure magic! Vinea Florens provided a velvety experience that unfolded beautifully, while Verba Pampinea presented an exquisite intensity and nuanced complexity. Each wine, rich in umami and remarkably easy to enjoy, overflowed with freshness and elegance. We were particularly drawn to the charming micro-cuvées of Verba Pampinea, where the terroir spoke volumes, creating an invigorating energy that was perfect for a delightful warm-up. Pierre’s wines, brimming with unique character and pleasing depth, ignited a newfound passion amongst wine lovers, leaving us eagerly wanting more.

On a joyful note, Pierre and Florence now proudly have two wonderful sons, Edmond and Gustave. Their family has expanded beautifully with the construction of a new cellar that houses the stunning wines that continue to flourish. These creations are now sought after across the globe, and the rising admiration for them truly reflects their exceptional quality. Pierre’s dedication to his craft has not only increased the quantity and excellence of his wines but has also garnered global acclaim within the wine community.
